چکیده

small, left-hemisphere, inferior parietal lobe lesions involving the angular gyrus. It is often associated with aphasia and there appears to be some relationship between the severity and nature of aphasic auditory comprehension problems and the severity and nature of alexia. The variables effecting comprehension include word frequency, part of speech, emotionality, personal relevancy, syntactic complexity and length and degree of inference required for interpretation. Individuals with acquired alexia can be classified into four groups: deep alexia, surface alexia, phonological alexia and pure alexia. Error patterns, as they relate to semantics, orthographic length and word frequency distinguish the types of acquired alexia. Some have suggested that phonological alexia is on the continuum of deep alexia (Friedman1).

Gerstmann’s syndrome in non- dominant hemisphere: a case report

Gerstmann’s syndrome is caused by a left (dominant) inferior parietal lesion, particularly involving the angular gyrus or subjacent white matter of the left hemisphere. We describe case of an 80 year old right handed man admitted to our hospital with history of sudden onset of blurred vision. At first in neurological examination, he had left hemonymus hemianopia and characteristic features of G...

Thalamic alexia with agraphia

Alexia with agraphia is defined as an acquired impairment affecting reading and writing ability. It can be associated with aphasia, but can also occur as an isolated entity. This impairment has classically been associated with a left angular gyrus lesion In the present study, we describe a case involving a patient who developed alexia with agraphia and other cognitive deficits after a thalamic ...

Reading therapy strengthens top–down connectivity in patients with pure alexia

This study tested the efficacy of audio-visual reading training in nine patients with pure alexia, an acquired reading disorder caused by damage to the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex. As well as testing the therapy's impact on reading speed, we investigated the functional reorganization underlying therapy-induced behavioural changes using magnetoencephalography. Reading ability was tested...

Functional connectivity of the angular gyrus in normal reading and dyslexia.

The classic neurologic model for reading, based on studies of patients with acquired alexia, hypothesizes functional linkages between the angular gyrus in the left hemisphere and visual association areas in the occipital and temporal lobes. The angular gyrus also is thought to have functional links with posterior language areas (e.g., Wernicke's area), because it is presumed to be involved in m...
